Poetry Slam > Further InfoToronto International Poetry SlamSpoken word fans get set for the first ever Toronto International Poetry Slam competition. The Slam which will take place on Sunday August 31st inside the Lula Lounge (1585 Dundas St. West) is being presented by Up From The Roots Entertainment as part of the Toronto Urban Music Festival.A total of 36 artists will compete against one another for $1000 US in prize money. Round one of the competition begins at 8pm. The show will be hosted by Dwayne Morgan, 2003 Urban Music Award Winner for Best Canadian Spoken Word Recording. Since their humble beginnings at the Green Mill in Chicago, poetry slams have steadily been gaining in popularity, as they bridge the gap between the artist and audience; making the latter an integral part of the evening. Up From The Roots, founded by Dwayne Morgan, has been producing slams and spoken word concerts for the past nine years, and this venture marks the first collaboration with the Toronto Urban Music Festival. The first edition of the International slam will include competitors from Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Buffalo, Detroit, Washington DC, New York, Pittsburgh, London England, and Vancouver, which will be represented by three artists, including Shane Koyczan, the only Canadian to win the U.S. National Poetry Slam competition.
