Pherenziks

Pherenziks, a duo consisting of DJ Grouch and local emcee Contagious, is both rare and essential. For the past 5 years they have focused on preserving the spirit of the DJ/Emcee union that was captured so well by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince or Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth. When Pherenziks records a song, two voices are exercised. Contagious communicates through verse, while DJ Grouch speaks through his hands. When asked if its possible to convey a message through the art of cutting Grouch attests that it is and goes on to say that he strives to communicate positivity. Excelling in his craft has allowed Grouch to travel across Canada, to the United States and to Amsterdam. In 1998, Grouch won the ITF Western Hemisphere Team Championships in New York along with Turnstylez. Contagious’ name accurately describes the effect he intends to have on his listeners. He claims that his message exists in the future and hopes that listeners can expand their present way of thinking in order to be, well, infected by it. They have recorded with some of Toronto’s best producers, including DJ Serious and Tone Mason and in terms of a live show, a fusion between old and new school Hip Hop can be expected. DJ Grouch can be heard on Thursday nights at 10pm on 105.5 FM.
