Brass Munk

It’s some years back at about 3:30pm on a Saturday afternoon. Across the city radio’s are tuned into CKLN 88.1 FM. DJ X interupts the music and is listing off events and info, when he introduces some visitors in the studio. A handful of voices, deep and calm, transmit over guest studio mics. After a brief converstation giving a background on who Brass Munk is, listeners are offered a session for their memorex and their memories. What ensues is a freestyle with Brass’s signature interactive approach. Every couple of bars a different voice picks up where the last left off. With listeners that are given on-air freestyles that are on point most weeks, it takes something exceptional to really make a dent in their minds. After a few minutes the mics are laid to rest and the studio erupts with noise, as do pockets across the G.T.A., who got a taste of this old-schoolish interaction with next-school skills.
Made up of crew members S-Roc, May19, Clip, and Agile - this four man click have found a fingerprint sound setting them apart from competitors and allies alike. Dope on the freestyle, Brass Munk have also had the opportunity to further prove their abilities through three rock solid singles. Sparking everything by dropping “1,2” with “Stop, Look, Listen” on the flip side, their follow up efforts have manged to be more and more impressive. The second single “Live Ordeal”, “Get Right” and the DJ Serious produced “Serious Business” showcased Brass’s ability to fuse party amping energy, punchlines, political/social commentary, and spiritual reflections into universally appealing Hip Hop. Proof of that is the heavy, heavy rinses on pretty much every community radio show, while seeing heavy rotation on Flow. Their third, and most recent single, “Get Right”, “Push Up” and “Subterranean” which features Kardinal Offishall is a testament to their banger making abilities as they repeated the success of the last release while upping the ante.
Hailing from Scarborough, Brass Munk have already made a huge international dent with their single releases due to international distribution. Getting positive feedback across the globe, it is clear that the planet is thirsting for the refreshing approach to Hip Hop Brass Munk has taken. The next step now is to give Canada a chance to really feel Brass through an upcoming EP release. As much love as they have recieved abroad and at home, Brass Munk does not feel that they have really given people a chance to get into their sound on a large scale. Sitting in front of them is the opportunity to place themselves among Hip Hop’s most creative and respected crews. As illustrated in the 88.1 story, countless radio shows and stages have experienced the same sort of memorable performance.
The prospects for success for a domestic project is always a good thing, but when the artists are as down to earth and humble as Brass Munk, it’s that much better. This rare combination of talent and creative vision may very well propel these young men who care about thier comunnities and use their voices to speak upon the realities that people hunger to hear addressed to new grounds of musical achievement in Canada.
