"Sound Unbound"
Sound Unbound is Paul D. Miller's follow up to his award winning first book Rhythm Science (MIT Press, 2004). First and foremost, Sound Unbound is an anthology - it's a collection of 36 essays that focus on the role of the artist, composer, and writer in a world that is becoming more interconnected every day.
In a lecture format, exploring the overall theme of sound in contemporary art, digital media, and composition, Miller reconstructs the history of sound and recorded media by several of the most well known artists of their field - ranging from Brian Eno, Steve Reich, Moby, Chuck D, and Pierre Boulez, to artists, writers and theoreticians like Jonathan Lethem, Bruce Sterling, Manuel Delanda, and even Islamic culture's relationship to hip hop with essay by media activist and artist Naeem Mohaimen. In using the essays that are in Sound Unbound, Miller makes the lecture format a cross between a formal exploration of the issues Sound Unbound focused on, and the remix concept that drives much of the book. It's a rip-mix-burn-lecture.
Rhythm Science author Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid asks artists to describe their work and compositional strategies in their own words. These are reports from the front lines on the role of sound and digital media in an information-based society. Miller's lecture will be an hour, and is accompanied by his use of many historic texts, rare audio recordings and films, to demonstrate the complex relationship between text and art in a multimedia context.

PANELS:
1. Music Publishing And Alternative Revenue Streams
In today's ever changing world of music, artists must continue to educate themselves in new ways to generate revenue in order to have a successful career. Traditional retail outlets that sell CDs continue to dominate but the ground is rapidly shifting. For artists, this means having a better understanding about music publishing and all the other revenue streams -- whether it is digital outlets online, video games, film, television. Industry insiders say these areas will soon generate significant revenue streams.
2. Touring Opportunities
Opportunities for touring across Canada and beyond.
More than any other music group in the history, the Rollingstones has demonstrated the value of touring to an artist’s bottom line. It is more important now than ever before: building a fan base, generating revenue at the gate, spurring merchandise sales, and providing footage than can be packaged for an artist website and for live DVD performance sales. Panelists will be drawn from booking agencies, distributors, promoters, artists, label representatives.
3. Indies Cutting A New Deal: How to Survive & Prosper
How independent labels are surviving and prospering with the massive changes the music industry is currently undergoing.
4. Funding Agencies: How To Gain Access & Support
Canada has a rare and enviable record internationally of funding commitments to the arts to help ensure "Canadian voices." There are several funding agencies at the Federal, Provincial and Municipal levels that subsidize Canadian arts. We will continue to bridge the gap by inviting representatives from various organizations to inform and educate those in the urban music community about the opportunities that are available. These include Canada Council, FACTOR, Video Fact, Socan, Starmaker, provincial funding organizations, e.g. OMDC)
5. Managing for Success: Self Employment & Getting the Right Team
Whether one is a self-employed or has a manager who is representing your business interest, getting the right tool and the right team is a crucial part of any artist’s success. We will explore what artists need to know to get effective results in both areas.
